Assitej Cyprus

The Cyprus Centre of Theatre for Children and Young People - ASSITEJ Cyprus is the national centre of Cyprus within ASSITEJ International, a global network active in over 80 countries. Founded in 2021, the Centre promotes theatre and performing arts for children and young people, supports audience development, and strengthens connections between the Cypriot artistic community and the international sector. It currently counts 255 members, including theatres, groups, and individual professionals.

 

The Centre delivers a dynamic programme of artistic, educational, and social initiatives, including the Mitsikouri International Festival and participation in the ASSITEJ Small Countries Network. Through projects like “Every Child at the Theatre” and “The Articles,” it advances access to culture, children’s rights, and the link between arts and education. Internationally, ASSITEJ Cyprus participates in major programmes such as Perform Europe and “The Right Time” (Creative Europe), supporting creation, mobility, and professional development for Cypriot artists.

 

It is actively engaged in ASSITEJ networks and international forums, while its President, Stavros Stavrou, serves on the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ International. With a strong social impact and international outlook, ASSITEJ Cyprus is a key organisation shaping the development of theatre for young audiences in Cyprus and advocating for every child’s right to participate in cultural life.

International

ASSITEJ International was founded in 1965. ASSITEJ unites theatres, organisations and individuals throughout the world who make theatre* for children and young people. ASSITEJ is dedicated to the artistic, cultural and educational rights of children and young people across the globe and advocates on behalf of all children regardless of nationality, cultural identity, ability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion. ASSITEJ brings people together so that they can share knowledge and practice within the field of theatre for children and young people in order to deepen understandings, develop practice, create new opportunities and strengthen the global sector. The members of ASSITEJ are national centres, professional networks, and individuals from around 100 countries across the world.

* The term theatre is used in its broadest sense to mean the performing arts for young audiences encompassing dance, puppetry and visual mediums, live art as well as text based theatre.
